Kappa Kappa Psi starts music tutoring in the 9th Ward!

Members of Kappa Kappa Psi, the National Honorary Band Fraternity, continually seek out service opportunities in the community. Our most recent service activity is a tutoring program in the Lower Ninth Ward. The program is located at the Church of All Souls Community Center, where children from kindergarten through 8th grade come after school to work on their homework and learn music. For the first hour we help them with general homework; in the next hour we assist with the music program. The music program is new at the community center, and led by a recent graduate of Loyola. Our presence there helps the students build trust in us, and we are able to help them focus on the task at hand. In past weeks, we have taught them rhythm, sight reading, and some have learned simple songs like "Hot Cross Buns" and "Mary Had a Little Lamb." The students use all string instruments, and many of them are picking up an instrument for the first time. It is important to us to develop relationships with music programs in our local community and help them grow. It has been a rewarding experience so far, and the students are learning more and more every week.
